Franjo Grotenhermen, MD 

I was born on 5.7.1957 as the eldest of 4 children of the farmer Anton Grotenhermen and his wife Josefa Grotenhermen. My birthplace is a small village with about 200 inhabitants in North Rhine-Westphalia, called Robringhausen. 

I was given the name Franz-Josef by my parents, but have been called Franjo since the beginning of my studies and have used this name ever since. 

I have 2 sons, Bruno, born on 22 September 2004, and Arno, born on 13 February 2009. 

I finished my schooling at the Gymnasium Erwitte in 1976. In the same year I started my medical studies at the University of Cologne in the winter semester of 1976/77. 

During my studies I was politically active. I was an elected member of the Cologne student parliament from 1977-1985. From 1980-1982 I was spokesperson for the Cologne medical students. From 1982-1984 I was the cultural officer of the General Student Committee (AStA) of the University of Cologne, and between 1983 and 1984 I was also the second chairman of the AStA. As cultural officer, I organised cultural events at the university. 

I completed my studies in 1985 with the medical state examination. I subsequently worked as an assistant doctor in the hospital in the subjects of surgery (in the Marienhospital Erftstadt, head physician: Dr. Erich Kalbhenn), internal medicine (in the Marienhospital Erftstadt, head physician: Dr. Rüdiger Zoll) and naturopathic treatment in the Lahnhöhe Clinic in Lahnstein (head physician: Dr. Rolf Bruker), which is now a psychosomatic clinic, and as a holiday replacement in GP and internal medicine practices. 

I have been incapacitated for work since February 1990 and on early retirement since April 1992. I was diagnosed with small vessel disease with pronounced orthostasis disorder. Since 1990, I have therefore been forced to spend most of my life lying down and have had to give up my medical practice. 

From 1993 onwards, my knowledge of biomathematics led me to consult on the writing of scientific papers and biometric evaluations in the fields of education, psychology and medicine, before I concentrated my working time almost entirely on cannabis and cannabinoids. 

In 1995, I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Cologne with a doctorate on an oncological topic (doctoral supervisor: Professor Dr. Volker Diehl, Director of the Medical Clinic I of the University Clinics of Cologne). 

At the end of 1993, I learned by chance about the medicinally useful properties of the cannabis plant. In the spring of 1994, I spent a few weeks reading the scientific literature and for the first time compiled an overview of the state of scientific knowledge at that time on the therapeutic potential of cannabis. This was published as an additional chapter to the German translation of a book by Professor Lester Grinspoon of Harvard University in Boston, USA, (“Marijuana: the forbidden medicine”), which made the subject known to a larger audience in German-speaking countries for the first time. 

In 1997, my first book “Hemp as Medicine” was published. It was published in several languages, including English with the title “Cannabis Healing”. This was followed by another 10 scientific and popular science books, some of which were published only in German or only in English, some of 

which dealt with only one specific topic, including cannabis and road traffic, cannabis in cancer, the potential of CBD.

In April 1997, together with colleagues, patients and other interested people in Cologne, I founded the Association for Cannabis as Medicine (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Cannabis als Medizin e.V.). (ACM), of which I was the first chairman. Since then, I have been a member of the board and the managing director of the ACM. The ACM was the essential driver for the enforcement of the Cannabis as Medicine Act of 2017 and other initiatives to facilitate the possibilities of using cannabis-based medicines. 

In March 2000, in my private flat, a small group founded the International Association for Cannabis as Medicine. (IACM). It was later renamed the International Association for Cannabinoid Medicines (IACM). I was the 1st chairman of the IACM and have been a member of the board and its executive director ever since. There are plans for another name change to the International Alliance for Cannabinoid Medicines (IACM). I am the author of the IACM Bulletin, a newsletter that has been published in several languages on the IACM website every fortnight since 2000. 

In 2012, I opened a medical practice again, as at that time many patients in Germany could not find a doctor who was familiar with this topic. Today I run the Centre for Cannabis Medicine (ZCM) in Steinheim/NRW. 

I am Chief Medical Advisor of Telaleaf Health, an internet platform for telemedicine in the cannabis field, employee of the nova Institute in Hürth near Cologne, co-owner of the company Endoxo GmbH, which produces CBD and other hemp products, Lecturer at the Dresden International University for the education of doctors and pharmacists in the field of cannabis as medicine, expert witness for social courts, honorary chairman of the French Union Francophone pour les Cannabinoïdes en Médecine (UFCM), member of the scientific advisory board of the journals Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, edited by Prof. Daniele Piomelli published by Mary Ann Liebert, and of the scientific advisory board of Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoids, edited by Prof. Rudolf Brenneisen published by Karger. 

I received the following awards: Hemp Award 1999 from Cannabusiness, IACM 2011 Special Award, ICBC 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award, Robert Newman Memorial Award 2018 from Akzept e.V., Honorary Award GFS-Award 2021 from Gemeinnützige Forschungsvereinigung Saluplanta e.V..
